The Island as a metaphor of life and constant exploration is the theme that inspires the exhibition “Islands Never Found”, organized at the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, by Lóránd Hegyi, Director of the Musée d’Art Moderne of St-Etienne (France) and by Katarina Koskina, President of the State Museum of Contemporary Art of Thessaloniki (Greece).
The exhibition features internationally renowned artists who – through never-before published works – are called to interpret their own undiscovered Island: a never-ending voyage that is in any case pervaded by the doubt that the Island actually exists.
The “islands” are specific creative areas, unique and individual, where each of these artiststries to communicate an ideological, philosophical and aesthetic view of the world usinghis or her own language.
Over 70 works – installations, videos, photographs, sculptures, drawings and paintings – produced by about thirty artists of worldwide fame. Among them: Marina Abramoviç, AliceAycock, Louise Bourgeois, Tony Cragg, Danica Dakiç, Latifa Echakhch, Gilbert & George,Rebecca Horn, Anselm Kiefer, Jannis Kounellis, Richard Long, Luigi Ontani, Orlan, Dennis Oppenheim, Michelangelo Pistoletto. The latter, all-time representative of Arte Povera, has attracted our attention for the raw material used for his installation called Labirinto e Grande Pozzo.
Pistoletto builds a labyrinth using sheets of cardboard, creating small imaginary islands,where doubt is the driving element, the intellectual tension that pushes us in a continuous metaphor to travel in the quest of a Never(Is)land.
