CARTA (Paper) and MELA (Apple) together: an unprecedented novelty by Roto-Cart

Cartamela, registered trademark by Roto-Cart, is the first paper produced using pure cellulose enriched with waste coming from apple processing. Once dried, these residues are integrated: a composition unique on the market.

From apples to paper. The Cartamela project by Roto-Cart, a company based in Piombino Dese (Padova), stems from the intent to contribute to solve the delicate environmental issue of disposing of waste coming from apple processing procedures. These product residues have a strong impact on the environment and their disposal requires focused solutions. Appropriately analyzed and treated, the waste turned out to be rich in important raw materials such as cellulose and hemicellulose, particularly suitable for the production of paper. From here, the idea of a project to transform apple residues mixed with cellulose into a refined, ecological and completely biodegradable paper: Cartamela.

CARTAMELA, REGISTERED TRADEMARK BY ROTO-CART, is the first paper produced using pure cellulose enriched with waste coming from apple processing. Once dried, these residues are integrated: a composition unique on the market. Cartamela is a high-quality product having a strong ecological valence guaranteed by the natural ingredient – apples – that confers the paper a characteristic warm white color, and the FSC brand certifies that the cellulose comes from responsibly managed forests. Putting the project into concrete practice required collaboration with a partner in Bolzano, Frumat S.r.l., a company whose laboratories have been involved in the manufacture of eco-sustainable products for years.

TOGETHER WITH THE PRODUCTION ITSELF OF CARTAMELA – A PRODUCT THAT LOOKS LIKE NORMAL PAPER, has a pleasant handfeel, resistance levels equal to those of normal papers and a characteristic ivory color – the project also involved the graphics studio and the creation of the packaging of the Cartamela range of products: toilet rolls, kitchen towels, table napkins and handkerchiefs. The packs are transparent so the consumer can immediately appreciate that this particular paper is different from traditional white paper. Fresh, lively colors recall the naturalness of the product. Cartamela is proof of how it is possible to find alternative solutions when it comes to using environmental resources and aims to conquer the preference of consumers. Through a focused advertising and information campaign, Roto-Cart intends to reach broad areas of the market sensitive to the environmental issue by offering a natural, ecological, high-quality product. Producing and consuming all the while respecting the environment: Yes, it’s possible!
